THE BEST THING that happened to Christy the week before Christmas was when she read an emailed Christmas letter from a friend of hers who was living in Brazil. Christy had met Sierra Jensen in England when they were working together with a mission organization. Even though Sierra was younger than Christy, they hit it off and had remained friends along with Katie when they were all back at Rancho Corona University. What Christy loved most about Sierra was her courage and creativity. More than once Christy had been motivated in the past to take risks and follow her dreams as a result of Sierra’s influence. When Sierra accompanied Christy and Aunt Marti on their scouting trip to Switzerland, Christy quietly processed her decision in light of the enthusiasm Sierra showed for the extraordinary international experience that was offered to Christy. If Sierra could have gone to school in Basel and worked at the orphanage, she would have grabbed the opportunity in a flash.

The international opportunity Sierra ended up grabbing was a chance to work in Brazil. Her Christmas letter made it clear that she was still enlivened by the experience, obstacles and all. It was her personal note to Christy at the end of the letter that felt like a real gift to Christy. Sierra wrote:

I think of you often, Christy, and when I do I think of your calm spirit. In every setting I’ve ever been in with you, you always made me feel welcomed. I try to have that same open spirit with all the young women I work with every day. There’s something life-changing about knowing that you are wanted and that you are thought of in sweet and lasting ways. That’s how you make me feel, Christy. And now I’m trying to model that here in this place where it would be easier to grow suspicious and guarded, especially because of the cultural differences. For a long time I’ve wanted to tell you what an influence you’ve had on my life and how grateful I am for you. I don’t know when I’ll get to see you again but I’m already looking forward to that day, whenever it may be – here or in eternity.

Those simple, kind words gave Christy a boost of confidence. When she went to work each day she tried to focus on other people and not on the complex challenges she and Todd were working through. That attitude of focusing on others especially helped when their lives began to change even more.

Four days before Christmas Todd received the call that was the start of a cosmic shift in the lives of Christy and Todd as a couple, and as individuals.
